Murals of Sanctums at Risk of Damage Due to Lockdown

The Director-General of Archeology, Prof. Senarath Dissanayake said that the countrywide lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the religious murals. The lockdown has caused the destruction of invaluable murals.

Thus, in order to prevent further damage, the religious sites will remain open for at least four hours daily.

He said that there are about 3000 old paintings and murals in archaeological sites within Sri Lanka. These locations could be destroyed if proper attention is not paid, he added.
